RCD Safety Switches
A safety switch - or RCD - cuts the power in a fraction of a second if it detects current leaking to earth. That split-second response is the difference between a minor shock and a serious injury. I install, test, and upgrade RCDs throughout Morley, Noranda, Dianella, and the inner north-east.
Why Every Home Needs RCDs
Many older Morley and Embleton homes were built before safety switches became standard. The original switchboards have circuit breakers or even ceramic fuses - these protect the wiring from overload, but they won't protect you from electric shock.
An RCD monitors the current flowing out through the active wire and back through the neutral. If there's a difference - even 30 milliamps, roughly the current through a small LED - it trips in about 30 milliseconds. That's fast enough to prevent serious harm.
WA law now requires RCDs on all power point and lighting circuits in rental properties. Owner-occupiers aren't legally required to upgrade, but the safety benefit is the same regardless of whether you own or rent.

Common Situations I See
“My switchboard has no safety switches at all”
Common in 1970s-80s Morley homes. The old ceramic fuse boards or early circuit breaker panels don't have RCDs. I can often add them without replacing the entire board, depending on its condition.
“The safety switch keeps tripping for no reason”
There's always a reason - it's just not always obvious. Could be a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor fitting, or degraded wiring insulation. I methodically test each circuit to find the fault.
“I'm selling/renting and need safety compliance”
For rentals, WA law requires RCDs on all power and lighting circuits. For sales, buyers often request a safety inspection. I do both, and I can usually complete the work in one visit.
